The upper arm attaches to the lower spring arm at the bottom and connects to the top crossbar (or tarp roller tube) across the top of the dump bed. This bend ensures the tarp frame clears the top edges or side rails of the dump body when swinging rearward or forward, preventing the metal tubing from catching or dragging on the sides of the truck.

The side arm acts as the primary pivot lever mounted on the lower side of the truck bed. It extends upward to connect to the top crossbar (tarp roller tube), sweeping back and forth in an arc ("flipping") from the front of the bed to the rear. By guiding the top roller bar over loose materials (such as gravel, sand, asphalt, or trash), it ensures complete end-to-end coverage, protecting other vehicles from debris and satisfying highway DOT tarping regulations.

The hexagonal profile is its defining feature. Unlike round axles, the 6-sided design ensures a positive mechanical lock with internal fittings, crank adapters, and drive gears. This shape prevents the roller tube from slipping or spinning freely under high spring/tarp tension when cranking or extending the flip arms. As the manual ground-operated crank or hand wheel turns the axle, it neatly winds or unwinds the tarp to cover or expose the payload.
